E Rosado C Contributing Writer doing my part for what IM I'M man is taking away from the rain forests by having my own says Scott Warren a Salt Lake resident who lives in the Rose Park area Warren first became interested interested interested inter inter- ested in gardening when he was doing work at the home of EF EE Sanguinetti Sanguinetti Sanguinet- Sanguinet ti who is the director of the Museum of Fine Arts at the University of Utah gave Warren Warren Warren War War- ren his first plant and started him on his way to creating his own back yard Eden Now 12 years have passed since the start of Warrens Warren's garden garden garden gar gar- gar gar- den and in these years Warren Warren Warren War- War ren has planted and maintained a garden of over 1000 different flora Warren admits that he gardens gardens gardens gar gar- gar gar- dens for relaxation to release anxieties and to relieve stress created by work and society We walked into the back backyard backyard backyard yard and entered a paradise in inthe inthe inthe the city yet away from any reminder of it Upon our entrance of the back yard Warren explained that formal gardens are t. 1 y ft s Y divided into rooms We then entered the first room which was the Show Garden This garden contained a single tree centered with two flower flowerbeds flowerbeds flowerbeds beds to the left and to the right These beds contained colorful varieties of and annual flowers Leaving the Show Garden we passed two waist-high waist pillars pillars pillars pil pil- lars with large flower pots and anda a myriad of pastel colors bringing a relaxing tone to the atmosphere Walking down the path we came to the second area which is the Well Garden This contains a well to the left of the path and a flower bed to the right which bends in a winding path The Well Garden Garden Garden Gar Gar- den is surrounded by trees over-hanging over a bench by the side of the well Moving along we came to the third area of the garden garden- the Forest Garden This garden garden garden gar gar- gar gar- den is Warrens Warren's shelter from the sun on hot days The Forest Garden is a tree congregation congregation congregation con con- which contains varieties from Eastern Red Buds to Aspens The Pond Garden is the next area we encountered The pond fronts a hill housing housing housing hous hous- ing shrubs and decorative stone monuments The fifth and final area is the Back Garden which is still under development Warren plans to finish planting a flower bed following the rear property line He also plans to put a sun dial somewhere in that area and rename the area the Sundial Garden There is something natural in planting something and watching it grow Warren said He also mentioned that a garden can cannot cannot cannot not be planned to great detail because plans have a funny way of changing when exposed exposed ex ex- posed to new ideas By creating lengthy vistas of uneven flower beds an optical optical optical op op- illusion of depth and size is seen Warren said We live in a high altitude desert and watering is quite important to flower plants he added This justified the elaborate watering system Warren installed in his gar gar- gar gar- dens Watering devices vary from in-depth in in certain areas to drip watering systems for potted plants used to give Warrens Warren's plants the daily drink they need With this technical watering system Warren does not have to worry about watering his plants because it is all auto auto- matic Warren says those who wish to start their own garden should start sm small ll and follow these four steps first get the soil the way you want it depending on what youre you're planting second is tree planting planting planting plant plant- ing and placement in the gar gar- gar gar- den third is the planting of shrubs and fourth the planting planting planting plant plant- ing of the flowers Gardening is the most popular hobby in America for both men and women And the accomplishments of your labors are visible says War War- ren t A.- A. i 3 7 1 b J c r rc rr p l |
