Show Recycling attempts at have been made Dear Editor In response to Kelly Riddles Riddle's letter in the June 27 edition of the Horizon about recycling there are and have been recycling projects going on at The members of Delta Epsilon Chi have been working on a recycling project for the last year We have worked with and the Spirit of the Nineties recycling project We have encountered problems and we are trying to overcome those hurdles The recycling project started as a class project and has grown in small steps from there We started out with a truck on campus for forone forone forone one weekend per month During the winter we had a truck on campus to collect the schools school's and community's recyclable materials We lost the truck this past April due to the lack of response and the did not feel it was cost effective to keep the truck here on a daily basis I would like to add there has been support from the Horizon and several departments departments departments depart depart- ments on campus The Horizon has printed an ad every week during the winter quarter letting people know what was acceptable for recycling recycling recycling recy- recy cling and where those materials could be dropped off off The copy center has supported supported supported sup sup- ported the project with their contribution of papers Dr Budd has approved of an environmental com com- I hope to see action on this to begin this fall when school resumes The ine idea or ot Dins bins tor for cans has been looked into we have encountered drawbacks in this area We understand that there are organizations on campus that collect the cans We have not seen progress in this direction The Theother Theother Theother other problems we face are where to put such bins how much space they will take up who is going to collect and maintain the bins and people putting garbage into the bins Paper collection also faces its own challenges We use a variety of different grades of paper on campus colored and white ledger paper computer computer computer com com- puter paper and newspaper Each of these different papers have to be sorted into their own category for the to accept The campus faces the challenge of where to store these materials until they can be collected and who will collect and maintain maintain maintain main main- tain them As with any project there is always room for improvements improvements improvements improve improve- ments new ideas and warm bodies to work together to accomplish successful achievements Delta Epsilon Chi would like to invite any student faculty or staff who have ideas they would like to share to get involved to develop a successful recycling program at For more information call Kathy Walton Walton Walton Wal Wal- ton or Nancyann Paige 1320 Nancyann Paige |
