Show Mormon males are not the only ones making choices for women A. A Dear Editor In the July 11 issue of the Horizon columnist Lynne Lucio discusses the Utah legislators bill to ban abortion abortion abortion abor abor- tion in her article Let freedom prevail The columnist who is not a Utah native Mormon or an antiabortion antiabortion antiabortion anti- anti abortion activist suggests that the overwhelming majority of this states state's elected representatives are male Mormons Therefore the bill will be passed because because because be be- cause of their sexist and religious beliefs She adds that if these representatives were not male or Mormon the bill would most likely pass due to better understanding understanding understanding under under- standing of the issue rather than looking at their male dominance and personal ideological beliefs Myself like the columnist columnist columnist colum colum- is not a native born bom Utahn nor am I a Mormon I Iam Iam Iam am also a supporter of pro- pro choice and feel that abortion should be kept legal as a r means of birth control I think that when she says that the Mormon males are making choices for the women of the state by making abortion illegal she forgets that this issue has been fought throughout this country for many years In Indifferent Indifferent Indifferent different areas of the country religions are putting putting putting put put- ting the same pressure on the local governments to tomake tomake tomake make abortion illegal just as the local churches here in Utah In the article the writer argues that fifty percent of are Mormon so therefore its it's the male Mormons Mormon's fault for this bill Are all of Utah's legislators Mormon men Are all the themen themen themen men in Utah Mormon Where are all of the women's views Where are the Catholics views The Baptists The Protestants The agnostics The atheists Where are these the people that make up the other fifty percent Do they all believe in pro-choice pro I think not Just as every Mormon male is not anti Everyone has different views on the issue and will come cometo to different conclusions no matter what religion they are If the bill is accepted the legislators are also sible I feel if the columnist is from out of state she should know as well as anyone about the dominance of different dif- dif ferent religions and political views in other areas of the country In this article separation of church and state is not the issue but abortion and the right to choose is Not only for Utah male Mormons but for everyone in the United States the decision dedsion should be theirs Melissa Baker |
