Show Scissor Scissor hands receives poor review Scale Franzman Staff Writer With ith all the hype surrounding surrounding surrounding sur sur- rounding the Edward movie I was anticipating anticipating anticipating an an- a couple of hours of good entertainment The theater was filled with people clearly expecting the same After the usual advertisements advertisements advertisements advertise advertise- ments at the beginning of the film silence filled the theater The audience of course was anxiously awaiting the Unveiling unveiling unveiling un un- veiling o of f Edward Scissor- Scissor hands The story opens with Diane Wiest playing a rather desperate Avon lady So desperate in fact that she is even willing to attempt selling selling selling sell sell- ing her products at the mysterious house on the hill The mysterious house of course is occupied by Vincent Vincent Vincent Vin Vin- cent Price as the inventor of the and the himself Being an Avon lady who believes in her products when the badly scarred but seemingly gentle monster enters she invites him home with her on the pretext that she can fix his face He goes with her so the story can continue Time passes and the family family family ly and friends of the Avon lady begin to accept Edward Depp as Edward spends most of his time staring blankly and grunting three letter words sparingly Sounds intriguing doesn't it And what a waste of this fine actors actor's abilities Soon Edward finds that he has talent cutting hair at record speed and in extremely extreme extreme- N Y IJ y ly bizarre styles which the neighbor ladies seem to love He also sculptures dinosaurs and out of trees bushes and hedges with his marvelous scissor hands also in record time He enjoys this and begins grunting his one syllable words with a hint of a smile on his face This was as far as I could determine the extent of the comedy in this so-called so romantic comedy Winona Ryder plays the daughter of the Avon lady and develops a love interest with Edward The chemistry and convincing acting are simply not there So much for the romantic part of this so-called so romantic comedy The There r e 1 s a awe weak a k demonstration of non tance of those who are different different different dif dif- dif dif- ferent by people who dont don't give someone who is different different different dif dif- ferent a chance and then a demonstration showing how those around a person with a handicap or something different different different dif dif- dif dif- ferent learn to love him the way he is Therefore Edward learns to love himself which is adequately demonstrated when Edwards Edward's inventor shows Edward a pair a normal normal normal nor nor- mal hands he had made for him Edward responds by cutting them to shreds with his therefore showing acceptance of himself himself himself him him- self the way he is The story was absurd the acting weak with the exception exception exception tion of Weist Probably the under 18 crowd will love it but for me my dates date's cologne was far more exciting than this movie |
