Show Y t 0 By Judd Morgan This is the second in a series of eight articles dealing with the office of Student Services Today we will review the process of selecting a career choice or major The traditional methods of career selection usually follow four basic patterns The first method is what we might call paternal or maternal assimilation We do what we have learned to do from mom and dad If dad brought you up on the farm you become a farmer If mom brought you up on the streets you become a This influential but non-directive non method of job choice was very prevalent during the pre-nineteen pre fifties when our culture was more agriculturally oriented Weare We Weare Weare are beginning to see a shift back in this direction with the popularity of vocational-technical vocational education apprenticeship programs and family businesses The second method of job selection is simply what we might call the random selection security syndrome A good example example example ex ex- ample of this would be the high school out drop-out who finds employment at whatever he can and establishes himself as a good employee slowly growing with the firm until his entire lifestyle revolves around his wage his fellow workers and his company He wouldn't think of leaving his job because he doesn't know any other type of work and would be afraid to try to find a new career because of limited education and diversified diversified diversified di di- versified experience The third category of career selection belongs to what we might call the planned professional He knows what he wants to pursue from a relatively early age and pursues it until he heis heis heis is one A fourth method could be called the professionally diversified diversified diversified diversi diversi- fied career selection process An individual who obtains the necessary professional credentials to become a teacher or businessman may then secure a job in a large variety of areas Many times teachers are asked to teach disciplines they have not studies or prepared to teach And likewise a student who prepares himself for a career in business may end up being an accountant a sales rep a buyer an office manager etc The in individual vidual who goes from one job to another is not categorized into a real career selection group because he is not selecting a career he is working solely for enough money to sustain himself and not for professional development or person personal l growth Whether you have carefully selected your career objective or not you should realize that your working years will be from about age two twenty-two until age sixty fiver This is well over forty years of employment It would be a horrible experience experience experience exper exper- to have to work for forty years at something some ng that you did not enjoy or perhaps did not have much aptitude for In the office of Student Services we would love to help assess your aptitudes and personal interests and help either determine what you might enjoy doing for the rest of your life or verify your commitment to the career goal you have already chosen Please come see us |
