Show Wheelchair Marathon ToGo To ToGo r Go From Logan To Provo by Michael Waldron J I Weber State College Students from five Utah colleges and universities are planning a wheelchair marathon stretching miles from Logan to Provo with the proceeds going to chari charity ty The Utah Council of Presidents is sponsoring the event which will begin at am a.m. Mar 5 with Weber State College Brigham Young University the University of Utah Utah State University j Sn Snow w College and of Salt Lake Lake exp expected ct d to p participate The marathon idea was conceived for a couple of reasons said Mike Waldron Weber State College executive vice president We wanted to bring the schools together for a common purpose The other purpose is to raise funds for some of the physically challenged people in the area Funds raised will go to Deseret Village a community housing project in Spanish Fork designed for mentally handicapped adults Originally we wanted to do the marathon to raise money for the physically challenged here at Weber State Mr Waldron said but when Deseret Village approached BYU with a request for help the Utah Council of Student- Student body Presidents thought t the thet two o would dov dovetail nicely The marathon calls for a student to take the wheelchair ir from Logan to Brigham City beginning ginning at a. a am a.m. with each student travelling one half mile students will take over in Brigham City and will travel south on US 89 to Ogden and will end where US 89 leaves leaves' Ogden U of U students will take takeover takeover takeover over and head for the Salt Palace in arriving about pm p.m. UTe h students will take the chair to Dra Draper r arid and BYU students will have havethe havethe havethe the last leg of the trip starting about 1 00 am a.m. March 6 arriving in Provo about am a.m. It will take about 30 hours to finish the trek and will involve some students Lending professional help will be Vance Anderson and Jim Petersen two wheelchair athletes Anderson will handle Sardine Canyon north of Brigham Ci City y and Pete Petersen en will take the steep hill south of Ogden The individual colleges and universities are splitting the money raised for Deseret Village The money will be used by the schools for the needs of the handicapped on their campuses |
