S Lowe Vice President for Instruction at Utah Technical College at Salt Lake It has been a long hard fight getting this program into place We have overcome many difficulties Now we w can see that it is worth the effort Dr Lowes Lowe's remarks were made at a dinner honoring the first 16 graduates from the aviation technician program Accord According ng to Dean Walter White The aviation program began about three years ago ago- when several representatives from firms located at the Salt Lake airport asked the college to train airframe and mechanics We quickly learned that a quality program started from scratch would be prohibitively expensive But the local firms were not easily discouraged They started calling us to donate engines tools aircraft and much mach of what we needed to get the program started It was really incredible The first step was to organize an advisory committee to help get us started star ed Frank Kelsey perhaps Utah's foremost authority on civil aviation agreed to chair that committee A recognized aviation maintenance Woodbury was employed to survey the industry to learn exa exactly which kinds of training were most needed and to develop a program designed custom-designed for the Wasatch Front Various bureaucratic problems kept the program from being funded by the state so with pressure from th the industry federal Critical Industries monies were allocated to begin the program Finally after many hearings special task force committees and discussion the Utah State Board of Regents narrowly passed a motion to approve ut Utah h Technical Technical Technical Tech Tech- Colleges College's aviation maintenance program There was a great deal of summarized Woodbury celebrating at our Woods Cross airport campus Without the courage and dedication n of students faculty and advisory committee particularly when the program seemed doomed we could not have established this important course said John Udy division chairman in the School of Tr Trades des and Industry The new aviation program is a year two-year course of study which prepares a student to pass the FAA examination and work on aircraft engines and airframes air Graduates of the first first- year two-year course include James L. L Baxter Dudley T. T Bedbury Clay S. S Boyack Jim F. F Craig J. J Johnson David E. E Johnson Timothy Sheril J. J Lewis Brett M. M Miller Jeffrey Miller David Noble Wesley N. N Roosendaal Mehran Thomas M. M Sandra F. F Tally a flight attendant with Western Airlines and Manuel D.
