| Show skepticism THE SAFTEY VALVE the human weakness which clothes government with a degree cf integrity and competence it seldom deserves has strewn the path of history with the wrecks of many nations to say nothing c of brutal oppression and exploitation the recent five pe per r center I 1 investigation was a mild but ominous warning it revealed reprehensible hen sible practices in the highest levels of government bribery and evasion of law were apparently clearly shown and condoned yet there is little the public can do about it demandil demanding C that the administrators of government in veti gate convict and hang themselves to the nearest tree is not very practical that is why the warming warning implicit in the incident cannot be disregarded it shows what can happen when government gets beyond the control of the people it shows the deadly potentialities of three man authorities such as the proposed columbia valley administration which would exercise economic control over vast regions ard and chos members are accountable to no one except the president I 1 who appoints them it shows the danger of putting government into the electric business or any other business a as S a tax exempt i unregulated monopoly it shows I 1 the deadly irony of the welfare state in which th opportunities for uncontrolled abuse and official corruption are endless I 1 this one single incident of the I 1 five per centers lays bare the I 1 whole reason for looking with a I 1 skeptical eye at the idealistic plans of the theorists whose fundamental tenet in the approach to any problem is that the government can do it best |
