Show opinion Is that there are too many deer an article in our issue of october 28 written by albert R lynian lyman protesting the indiscriminate slaughter of deer caused J A well known cattleman of indian creek and moab to express his opinion from another angle mr belie believes ves that there will be plenty of deer for a long iong time to come we quote from his le letter ater 1 I do not believe mr air lyman has been on the range for several years I 1 wish t to 0 state that I 1 have been all over elk mountain and the blue and la sal mountains this year and over most of the winter range and saw hundreds of deer all over the range during the last hunt I 1 saw deer in one bunch on maverick point and lots of deer everywhere ile he also adds the stockmen stoc kmen all 20 lore c to 0 see lots of nice game on the range rana but they do not like to be eaten out them san is as a big county and can take care of a lot but when they use the range the year around and our fields are full of deer something should be done deer are on the range all the time and livestock are allowed to use the range only through june july and august rereading mr air clymans article we believe that what he objects to as the fact that so many hunters come to Sanjuan san juan during the hunting season who take advantage of the privilege of hunting many of whom are members of parties without having secured their individual hunting license mr air lyman called attention to this practice by saying starting a week before the hunting season opened they lined the road from blanding to elk mountain with cars trucks trailers saddle horses and equipment to stay till they got everything they could carry away they came from as far away as the th e gulf g ulf shore in one direction the pa pacific cefic shore on the other and it is estimated there may have been a thousand hunters on the mountain at it one time mr aar lyman also called at attention tenton to what he called an easygoing easy going administration for he added they find the gates thrown open and essential restrictions lift lifted so they can kill and carry away or leave to rot as they please and so we present two opinions on a vital subject each one furnishing food for thought it is true that during the hunting season just ended many of the visiting hunters carried off the best meat while some of our local men were unable to get very much this might have been due boluck to luck but it could also be that the first comers had the advantage many of our own men waited until the mountains were less crowded knowing the danger when too I 1 many n any hunters invade the same h hunting area those who come from out of the state always arrive ahead of time and as mr air lyman states last year was bad enough but this year there was little pretense of enforcing conditions of the license or of seeing that the hunter even had a license we believe it was this lack of attention as much as anything else that caused mr air lyman to send his article to the record for publication mr also has a p point 0 ga i f for 0 r consideration and we are glad la to give space to excerpts fro from his letter concerning the situation |
