Show monticello monti cello to have municipal municipal uni tuni cipal air port aalf if it were not for the vision of civic minded persons there would be little chance for the growth or development of projects that spell progress for a town but it takes more than vision since the idea must be developed step by step in spite of obstacles that must be overcome overcome for the past three years melvin frost has been working on the theory that tha monticello should have its own airport and during that time he has investigated many possible sites As mentioned in a previous issue mr air frost recently recently Y purchased a fine little plane and since then he has flown many miles in all directions and has also made more careful study of conditions from the air some time ago a strip of land owned by lawrence black was set part for a landing field negolia C gons afons are under way for the town rown jf monticello to purchase this land but in the meantime work wag wa started to develop it A foot with less than one per cent centigrade grade was made at present it is feet wide but plans are underway under way for extending it to feet across the site is located in open country tr some eight miles from town according to mr frost the location is ideal not only for its landing possibilities but because of weather veather conditions which vary so much in this part of the state he claims that this area is affected less by rain or snow fall and when the new road which the county commissioners have committed themselves to build is finished the distance to the airport will be less than it is now through the winding cross country road which turns off from highway some isome five miles east of town the new ne w road will be a continuation of the boulder road which is south of the highway and will run straight north mr frost stated that he is indebted to the county counts officials and the atomic energy commission who have contributed so much toward the present develop developments men ts he also expressed appreciation to mr black for the use of his land and to the state road engineers who surveyed the site and made a contour map of the location which he received this week the lions club is nov noy taking interest in the project and mr air frost has been asked 6 to select two to other members to form a committee to represent the club the field has been checked by AA officials and will appear ti t P ti i future U aeronautical maps T the he most important immediate improvements prove ments under consideration are the more direct road a telephone and some minor changes at the airport site As the work progresses we will mention other things we learned when we saw what has been accomplished thus far when we visited the site and made a trip by plane to view it from the air |
