Show SCHOOL I I 1 1 MAKES REPLY editors note in our august 12 issue on page five we ran an article titled school lunch program report in thi this s piece among other things the writer stated dur fr ing the discussion jay reda redd board bard member passed a newspaper r clips i ping aping to several board members visitors were werd not enlightened as i to the contents of the clipping in order that we might enlighten the public as to the contents of this clipping mr air redd was con suited and submitted the clipping an editorial from the deseret news of salt lake city which he stated expresses his views concerning the school lunch program the editorial follows WANT SCHOOL LUNCHES strange as it may seem the proposal now before the congress I 1 to pr provide idea lunches for school children is is just another step on the downward path toward socialism at first glance it may appear as A a highly desirable social goal million of children are undernourished many parents are incapable of providing balanced and sufficient diets very possibly the general health of many children would be improved under such a plan there can be no valid object I 1 eions to school lunches as such they may be commendable broj acts but when provided by the I 1 federal government and when considered in connection with a myriad other federal controls now proposed or in effect they are a milepost on the road that leads away from freedom school lunches are a type and a symbol of a great group of similar government controls which in their aggregate will mean the end of liberty if the federal planners can persuade the people to adopt the school lunch pro program ram aythey tod can do likewise for a program to clothe the children tomorrow I 1 and d a program to build homes for the underprivileged under privileged next week and so on until a year from now the state will be raising the children I 1 instead of the parents state control of children is hillers Hit lers method if that government overn ment is best which governs least as most americans always have believed then our present system is getting worse and worse never in our history has there been a trend in government comparable to the present one for 15 years nearly every policy every proposal every act of government has been designed to concentrate more power in the federal union washington and wilson jefferson and jackson Clevel cleveland nd and coolidge would all turn over in their graves if they could see the parade of rights and powers moving from the people and the states to the federal bureaus these great presidents all believed that decentralization of power was the basic cornerstone of our republican form of government now if lunches are desirable for school children then by all means lets have them but lets preserve our fundamental right of local self government we can administer the program ourselves there is no need to continue a trend that sacrifices freedom an in order to gain a few loaves and fishes local school boards know be better tt ter what the needs of school children are than planners in washington we dont need to ta have social betterment imposed upon us we are of age we catt can handle our own af affairs fairs and it wont cost us any more to do the job to assume that ton something bething costs less because the fe federal of era I 1 government puts up part of the money is a delusion the taxpayers foot the whole bill in the end school lunches yes by all means if they are needed more afore federal activity within our sovereign states no not under any any circumstances food without freedom is a bitter diet |
