Show bluff aluf f endangered by high water by mrs J N pehrson the san juan river has been high for some time and has gradually been cutting away acreage in bluff the river cutting in too close to town for comfort mrs sarah oliver and mrs kent nielson sent a night letter to congressman W k K granger asking for aid they received a reply on june 9 as follows please advise the citizen citizens ns of 1 bluff that the army engineers have reported on oil flood conditions at bluff and estimate it will cost to provide protection which is more than thelah the law will permit them to spend so would have to be raised locally however no money is available until july 1 suggest you contact the state to see if they can give you some assistance with this additional money have wired state engineer ed watson requesting that he give you immediate assistance A meeting was called that evening and was well attended although quite a few of the men are working out of town and could not be reached H von watkins was chosen as chairman and mrs J N pehrson secretary A committee of four men was nominated to represent the citizens of bluff in asking for assistance in protection from the river the committee members are as follows carlos hall lonnie wilson U A nielson sr and doyle their instructions are to contact the county commissioners sio ners the state engineer and the soil conservation service through mr biggs petitions were drawn up asking for immediate aid in controlling I 1 ithe the flood damage being done by I 1 sunday 20 people gathered at 1 the redshaw home for a basket irinner dinner then went on to the school continued on page seven BLUFF continued irom from page I 1 1 tile the river A great deal of the farm acreage has been taken and at present our homes are endangered they were signed hy by 32 of tile the residents and sent to governor herbert B maw representative weston L bayles state engineer ed watson and the san juan county commissioners some cable has been brought in in I 1 and the use of a caterpillar is expected today june 14 to protect the state highway representatives from the state slate engineers office made a survey of the river situation on june 12 |
