Show THE AFTERMATH OF WAR in more ways than one we now face the results of our long period of warfare and to greater extent than in in any previous time in the history of our country we in america have not been called upon to suffer in the same way as the people of other nations many of whom lost their homes and their loved ones and who now face starvation but we must now reconstruct cur way of life or suffer defeat in other ways we have laws to cover all phases of living conditions but when translated or interpreted they are so contradictory that only more confusion results the recent controversies over OPA regulations are but one example and the setting UP uj of fact finding boards which involve considerable time and expense and prolong the period of settlement of strikes and all other form of postwar post war plans thereby retarding future progress add to the confusion of these times 1 the differences of opinion and the stormy sessions we read about are indicative of what our representatives have to contend with when they try to reach agreements down in washington and so the vicious circle of unrest widens day by day with little or no chance of recovery from the 1 disheartening conditions of living for thousands of returned I 1 veterans who thought they were fighting to cave save america I 1 from similar conditions which were in evidence after the first world war another alarming condition we now face is the ever in increasing number of juvenile delinquency cases being reported even in our own state which includes a population composed for the most part of people of mormon faith which church teaches its children the precepts of right livin ing to greater extent than any other church or denomination yet we find an edit editorial 0 rial in a recent issue of de deseret s ret news that contains much f food f for or thought in the f following ol lowing I 1 paragraphs I 1 four years in the reform school is the penalty imposed impo on one 17 year old salt lake juvenile for repeated traffic violations in justice the committing judge could make nol no other order the public must be protected even from teenage I 1 gangsters when captured by police following a three mile chase through salt lakes southern residential section it was the boys arrest in just over that many months his drivers driver ts license had of course ion long since been revoked by the juvenile court what every thinking person would like to know is what were this boys parents doing all this time was it their idea to let him have access to a car for continued wild escapades until he finally killed some innocent pedestrian what about the parents pare rits of the 35 to 75 or youngsters who come before the juvenile court every week in salt lake strange as it seems there are five times as many boys and girls under 18 brought before the juvenile court in a week as there are those 18 and over who are charged criminally in the district court in a month Is it parental or juvenile delinquency that sends a boy to the state industrial school Is it the younger or the older generation that is going to the dogs when teenage teen age youngsters do things meriting jailing them in a reform school the montezuma journal published weekly in cortez colorado has issued a warning with a five point order that I 1 calls for unstinted enforcement of all safety regulations to end colorados disgraceful highway toll of deaths and injuries in another column we are listing these five points for the benefit of utah drivers who often go over the line into nearby cities to shop or on other business the article states that instruction has been given to every available member of the state patrol to be especially watchful of bf offenders and to lose no time in making arrests our own state has piled up a record of traffic accidents with many fatalities since the first of the year and only recently more rigid regulations including heavy penalties in keeping with the offense are being enforced all of these things must be taken into consideration as we take account of the aftermath of war and although they are tol to be expected as result of the greater freedom allowed our young folks during recent years the time has come when I 1 parents must gain control again and when home life must be restored else the future generation will develop even more dangerous traits in spite of all this we in america have learned how to help those who are in trouble leand and no call has gone unheeded when the need is set before us in the not distant day we shall be called on to contribute canned foods or money toward such supply for the st starving arvin millions abroad and as usual there will be the same generous response from peo people p le in all walks of life if it will teach Americans American sto tto be less extravagant the result of this campaign will have served a double purpose so do we see all sides to the picture and although There are many americans who have not yet been called upon to take much responsibility or to make sacrifices and many who have gained in a material way as result of the war before this period of reconstruction ends all will in some way be affected in other words conditions of living will necessarily be even worse before they can become better and many adjustments of now will soon get under way all of which will result in a new and better way of life in the final analysis |
