Show with our men in the service new haven conn on nov 2 aviation cadet melvin hurst son of mr and mrs 0 P hurst of blanding utah received his commission and gold bars today at the graduation ceremony of the army air forces training command school at yale university having met rigid physical and mental aptitude tests lt hurst was sent several months ago as an aviation cadet to this school where he began training to be become come a technical officer in aircraft maintenance engineering he is now prepared for duty at an advanced flying field there he will be in charge of a crew of enlisted men who are specialists in maintenance the men who repair aircraft shot up during fights and raids and who provide the flying crew with a plane inspected and prepared for combat overseas reports on engineers graduated from the same school indicate that they are of backbone importance in every flying mission carried out by the in its aerial campaign over europe the rugged program of the trains them to keep planes on the wing win when facilities for repair of damaged aircraft are limited to a few hand tools in a combat zone airdrome for two weeks prior to graduation the new technical officer was trained under simulated battle conditions from sleeping in his plane to working on it at night with the aid of blackout black out lanterns mrs lloyd duckett received a letter from her husband who is recovering from wounds received w while hile in battle somewhere in italy several weeks ago the letter included the following information which friends of the family will be glad to read 1 I guess id better drop a line and let you know how things are I 1 a am in a hospital they finally hit me not bad so dont worry I 1 got hit in the neck and left thigh but am doing fine 0 have been here for 12 days and can get around a little so its not too bad they sure have some swell doctors and nurses here who know their stuff pac alvin lewis is enjoying a v visit i s i t with home f folks while on another short furlough he will leave on sunday to make other visits before returning to camp next week |
