Show experiments OF VALUE BRING RICH REWARD 0 Edi editors torIs note we are indebted to mr J H eagar for the following article and happy to pub lish ish it we learned of this development last week when mr du bois came to the office to invite e us to go along w li mr eagar and mr andrews although it was impossible possible os sible to do so at that time the pity of it is that mr dubois must now leave his work and serve in the army but we hope for his safe return ere long in order hat chat he be may continue his fine work out east last week the writer of this article had occasion to go out to the eastern part of this county and while there along with horace andrews decided to look over the farm of ross dubois of which we had heard much the first thing we noticed upon entering hs his place was the vast number of fruit trees and shrubs he has plums apples peaches pears and other fruit trees growing and in spite of the cold spring there will be consider 1 able fruit this summer slimmer he has ha s many different varieties of rasp berries which are at the present time in blossom and apparently will produce well he also has strawberries currants and many other fruit plants growing e there since this has been a cold dry spring one would wonder how mr dubois manages to keep his plants supplied with moisture clean cultivation is the answer by digging into the well mulched soil two or three inches it was noticed there was still sufficient moisture in the soil to supply the plants and keep them growing for an indefinite period of time mr dubois I 1 does not allow weeds to grow and take the moisture mr dubois has done and is doing some very important work with sorghums sorg hums and grasses by carefully selecting and crossing he has produced some very fine individuals which promise to be better adapted to io the climatic and soil conditions condition sin in our country than any of the parent stock by selecting individual plants of grasses of crested wheat tall meadow oat and others M dubois has developed strains which give promise bof of producing more and better forage than that produced from the general run if this were accomplished it would be a valuable contribution trib ution to the farmers and stock growers of san juan county mr dubois will not be permitted to complete these experiments at the present time for his government has called him to the service his only regret is that all the valuable he has gained so far will be lost at least until his return seed that should be carefully selected when ripe ix ia the fall will necessarily have to be harvested not as seed that is valuable because of its possibilities of producing superior stock but as general run of seed very few people are qualified to perform this type of work and it seems that there are none available at the present time to do it |
