Show life story of well known san juaner 0 by isabelle redd joseph henry wood 67 of salt lake city formerly of monticello died at his home wednesday at a in of bronchial pneumonia mr wood was born in cedar city on march 8 1875 son of samuel and josephine chatterly wood he came to bluff when he was seven years old and was among the early pioneers of this thi s county he received his education in the BYU at provo and later late r attended the at logan when the spanish S pa n i s h american war broke out in 1898 mr wood enlisted listed and served the country during the war he filled a mission for the church in the central states after his return he served in the presidency of the in ward and stake capacities in 1902 he married lillian decker and moved from bluff to monticello where he engaged in farming and stock raising he served as supt bupt of the monticello sunday school for a number of years in 1912 he be was made bishop of monticello ward and served in that capacity until 1918 i he was sheriff of san juan county for two years and county commissioner for 12 years during his commissionership he saw the need of a new court house and bent ben every effort in that direction until the building was under way the writer believes that the court house will ever stand as a monument to his name the hyland hotel was the r residence cence of the wood family until they moved to salt lake city in 1923 for a number of years mr wood worked at the carpenters trade later he became an employee of the deseret news he was always active in church work and was president of the high priests quorum in the ward wani in salt lake city later he was chairman of the genealogical I 1 society in the ward he was also an active L DS tem pie worker he is survived by his widow his mother mrs emma wood ion longtime long time resident of monticello 7 five sons capt J earl wood now with the army in australia F continued on page 4 41 LIFE STORY TOLD continued from page 1 clair wood of salt lake city clark M wood of seattle wash merrill J wood of chicago and corporal mark D wood with the army in california two daughters daughter 3 miss berniece wood of ogden and mrs reed fairbanks of salt lake city two brothers arthur S and roy wood of monticello Montie ello three sisters mrs chas W broadbent of heber city and mrs H I 1 v d hansen and mrs frank Hs ti yf y monticello Montie ello and 12 gran grand chu e n funeral services were conducted friday at p m in the ward in salt lake city they were attended by a large crowd of onetime san the chapel was filled to capacity and the floral offerings were many and beautiful he was laid to rest in the city cemetery henry wood was known and loved by a large circle of friends in san juan county who mourn his passing yet deem it an honor to have known a friend such as he |
