Show WHAT IS PEACE we have talked about peace and peace makers so let us consider what we mean by the word the dictionary defines the word as a state of calm tranquillity freedom from war or disturbance spiritual content I 1 peace is all of this and more because one may feel that great inner peace referred to as spi spiritual 1 l content and yet be in the midst of turmoil or strife one may feel at peace pea ce when confusion or uncertainty prevails and perhaps only under such condition may real peace be made certain peace IS a state of calm and only those persons who are at peace within at all times and under all conditions may be said to know what real peace is to be unruffled or undisturbed u when things persons or conditions combine bin e to bring uncertainty or unhappiness of any kind into ones life is indeed a goal of attainment toward spiritual content to be calm amid the disturbing influences in our lives today is the first step toward such attainment and because the world is in such turmoil today with scarcely a family with absolute freedom from trouble of some kind there is greater opportunity than ever before to practice control of our emotions in an effort to gain peace As one friend we know well in i n the east expressed it in writing a fine thesis on the subject peace must begin with the individual before much effect will be felt by nations for nations are collections of individuals and as the individuals so the nations theartice The article further states the peace concept for the individual means fre freedom edom from worry hate and envy just as surely and more basically than freedom from actual strife which is the end result of all such thought held in the mentality jesus taught and practiced edthe the fundamentals of peace deac e arid and a as s the article referd referred ed to further farther states the masters two commandments will cover the peace concept of the individual community and nation but the growth of the peace concept is too slow something must electrify the nations with the brotherly love idea and nothing can do this but the acceptance of the masters peace concept and rules for daily living nations have grown enormously in task is larger than ever the envy and greed gred incited by tariff and boundary walls mineral deposits arid vast territory by the application of broader views and the elimination from public office and positions of responsibility lity of those who persists persist in holding to the old ideas of might making right are increasing the peace concept then starts with the individual ih not with the nation and means not only refraining from wars but from thoughts of peace that may ultimate in wars for there can be no action without previous thought a reaping 9 of what is sown whether the thoughts be in the mind of an arf individual or in the mass mind of a nation 1 I i Altho although tigh we may be a long way from even the temporary peace we see forming on the horizon of the present world war such a peace will come even as the armistice odthe of the last war brought about a cessation of actual warfare for a time such a peace is yet months away because the hatred or the longing for revenge on the part of many individuals now will gain momentum and cause baue more upheaval beav al than is now in evidence ahe the i war propaganda we nye listen to or read in our daily papers has stirred up the individual thoughts of people in such way that before long the people themselves will take the law in their own hands and force certain leaders out of doff office ice or of out of the positions of trust tru stand and responsibility the they y row now hold because of certain planetary aspects now in evidence watch ai also have their effect on individuals who lack the power to control their emotions they will be stirred to greater action and because of thoughts they hold which have haive been fanned finto inta elal flame ne as result of war propaganda or be etise of conditions ons under which many are forced to live no now there seem to be two classes classe of people in life today those who want it out and the very few who would set r up a resistance nce of another kind because they have no W si S i J feeling of hatred greed or envy or of any other form of adverse thought in their mind against their fel rather would they prefer to accept the masters peace concept and live in accord therewith they are those who have realized at least a degree of the real peace mentioned above and who will be the ones to establish the real peace to come after the wars cease and the remnants of people fruitful to be left way on the earth will have a chance to help in more of this time we may have more to say in the near future and for this time are we now preparing even though know there is much opposition to such thought now and we that very few are in harmony with our ideas or practices of living we shall continue to think peace of the kind that will last and because there are many people scattered thru out the length and breadth of this land who think as we do it wont be long before they will find each other and begin to work more definitely toward the end which will result in an everlasting peace for all mankind this is not a war of machines because no machine that I 1 ever saw was stupid enough to make war it participates only as the slave of men whose power is greater than their wisdom whose ingenuity runs beyond their morals we should never deceive ourselves therefore that an arsenal of democracy can win a war airplanes tanks guns are inert they ahey have neither courage nor initiative nor will they know nothing of blood swe sweat at and tears all the qualities that make for victory are the exclusive possession of men even if machines could win the ayar war they could not win the peace the four freedoms freedom of speech and religion freedom from want and alid fear all are alien to their nature peace like victory can be achieved only through mens courage Coux age imagination idealism and now comes a sour note a measure at least of consistency president elitt henry AT wriston of bi biown own university |
