Show News & Views Highlights of news events and personal opinions of people and happenings in Davis County. h V By GARY R. BLODGETT news editor I 3 There are days when I think the telephone will never stop ringing . There were a couple of those days last week -- right after my story about parallel parking hit the front page. In years past I have written many very controversial controver-sial stories and just waited for the phone.to ring, or for someone to threaten me with a law suit. But it didn't happen. Then when I "innocently" really, no harassment harass-ment intended I write a story about parallel parking park-ing , and all (you know what) breaks loose. At least a half dozen women took the time to call and bawl me out. All of them referred to the first paragraph in the story. It read: "Women drivers and a lot of men drivers, too can rest easily now, at least for a while. "Bountiful City Council members voted unanimously unani-mously Wednesday night to dealy parallel parking . on both sides of Main Street between 100 North and 200 South." That did it. I The implication that women drivers can't park parallel is what got these callers upset. It didn't seem to matter that in the same sentence I said, "and a lot of men drivers, too, can rest easily." Funny thing, I didn't hear any reprocustions from the men. Maybe they don't want it known that they, too, have trouble parallel parking. So to all of you motorists -- men and women , alike , whom I may have offended: "I'm sorry!" ft ft ft ft ft ft ft ft ft ft ft ft ft I don't always agree with the Bountiful City Council . But today, I do. At least on the matter of angle versus parallel parking. For awhile it looked like the council was leaning toward parallel parking and there were Cand still are) a lot of arguments in favor of parallel parking, especially when you hear the traffic and safety engineers en-gineers give their points of view. But for many people men and women, and a lot of teenagers parallel parking is in itself a problem. There's more potential danger to a person who doesn't know how to park the old buggy sideways than to someone backing out of an angle stall. And it can hold up traffic a lot longer than someone some-one backing into traffic from an angle stall. Maybe parallel parking is safer and traffic studies show that it is -- but I still favor angle parking. It's true that someday in the future perhaps sooner than we would like parallel will be a necessity neces-sity along Bountiful's Main Street. Hopefully, there will be ample business to warrant that heavy traffic and a need for parallel parking. But until then, I'm glad the council voted the way it did and let angle parking remain, at least for a while. ftftftftftftftftftftftft In the big cities, even in Salt Lake City, stealing is a lifestyle for some. But usually those things stolen are traded for money, or the items taken are desired de-sired by trie thief. It's hard to believe that either would fit the mold of the persons who recently stole from Viewmont High School a section of the Vikings Vik-ings pole vault landing pit. It was taken from the Viewmont track July 3rd or 4th. The section Is approximately 12 feet long, six feet wide and three feet deep with the name "Por-ta-Pit" branded on the end. Anyone knowing the whereabouts of this pit is urged to call the Bountiful Police Department. Oh yes, there's a $50 reward being offered by the ( VHS) school for information leading to the arrest of persons involved. ft ft ft ft ft ft ft ft ft ft ft ft On the brighter side: A recent survey conducted by the Chicago Sun Times showed that about 78 percent of married men interviewed would, if given the opportunity, marry their wives again. Their reasons ranged from "she's the most loving, supportive woman I've ever met" to "without her, I'd be a bum." How about you? |
