Show experiment TO GROW TREES ON DRY FARMS successful 0 A cheering note to dry farmers of the state was released this weel week from the office of extension forester J whitney floyd of the utah state agricultural colleda when he d ihal diat a new liew expert 1 carried on in t taj ho sta sla it is that hiees can be ii i i on a iry dry farm provided provid rd they arc planted weil weal and cultivated last year mr floyd in connection with the utah state experiment ment station planted four species of trees at levan flat dry farm experiment station in juab county where the rainfall averages from 15 to 16 inches annually the first group received no weeding nor cultivation cultivate on and of the group the russian olive survived siberian elm survived 65 honey locust proved hardy 85 and the black walnut did not survive at all although these trees were alive none of them thrived on this treatment receiving just enough cultivation to remove weeds the russian olive survived of the elms all were alive honey locusts were 65 alive and black walnut survived by 1570 15 the third group received cultivation every two weeks and all species survived making a hardy appearance at the last period of observation reports mr floyd when no cultivation was used taut but a straw mulch was scattered over the surf surface ace of the ground the russian olive remained strong elm survived 80 the locust survived and of the black walnut 66 of the trees were alive results of this experiment says mr floyd indicate that trees can be grown on dry f farms arms with a minimum of attention if they are of the right specie and from nw now on there is little need f for or dry farmers to go without shade or much needed tree shelter belts where precipitation is equal to that of levan flat which is an area representative of mois moisture conditions in nearly all dry farm sections of utah |
