Show SOIL conservation WORK progressing 0 soil conservation work is progressing in the san juan county did strict the camp moved from moab to monticello april 20 and since that time with the possible exception of one or two stormy days the work has been going on satisfactorily this year the district supervisors decided to have two side camps one in lasal and one in bluff the side camp in bluff was occupied last thursday may 8 and it is expected the men will go to the lasal camp in a few days there is urgent need in bluff for stream bank protection on the san juan river each year the water has taken its toll of land until at this time there is scarcely enough farming land to maintain the present inhabitants the work that is planned at bluff will require more than th an 20 feet of one and one fourth inc inch cable the cable will extend from the north bank to an island near the middle of the river bed at intervals the cable will be attached to large cribs made of logs and filled with rock large trees will be attached to the big cable in a manner that they will have a tendency to slow the water to the extent that silt will be drop 1 I i stead of carried down the stream then too there will be large rock and brush jetties betties extending from the bank out into the river bed these will divert the wlater water from the north bank the work at lasal will be that of fencing clearing land of brush seeding to grasses gully control work tree planting etc later in the season perhaps some fencing tree and grass planting contour furrowing and gully control work will be done on or near the top of blue mountain |
