Show homemakers WS PAGE marie M ogden an irish saint living in the tenth century wrote the above poem it is with a degree of hesitation n that one attempts to write for either the entertainment or the inspiration of ones fellowmen fel in the dawning of a new year so fraught with importance and meaning as the days and months bea before ore us mail brought to our desk a new book this dreamer by james I 1 vance D D we think a few excerpts with possible brief comment may be a profitable manner in which to begin the year there is one portion that is called america and the spiritual and from it we copy a number of lines this is the dream for 0 our ur country it is what america most needs god give us a spiritual baptism roger babson in a recent letter sent out to the children of his distinguished clientele throughout the nation says this chas P steinmetz who was unanimously recognized by the general electric company and other great similar organizations as the worlds foremost electrical engineer was once visiting my home while talking over with him prospective future inventions in connection with radio aeronautics power transmission etc I 1 asked him what line of research will see the greatest development within the next fifty years after careful thought he replied mr babson I 1 think the greatest discovery will be made along spiritual lines here is a f force orce which history clearly teaches s has been the greatest power in the development of men and hi history 3 yet we have merely been playing with it and have never seriously studied it as we have the physical forces spine day people will learn that material things do not bring happiness and are of little use in making men and women creative and powerful then the scientists of the world will turn their laboratories over to the study of god and prayer and the spiritual forces which as ye hardly been scratched when this day comes the world will see more advancement in one generation than it has seen in the past four some may recall how hov this statement electrified the country a few years ago As human beings we hesitate to accept the word of so unusual an authority for this great assumption we hesitate because we fear we often fear ridicule most of all al we fear being mistaken men want to believe to accept the best but hesitate in decision as to that which is most in keeping with already accepted standards they doubt that faith and belief rightly interpreted are stronger words than power and knowledge and yet more than eight centuries ago an irishman of the north country found the revelation of the divine life in a child ithe the morning star the splendour of the sun and today when the hearts of men and women quiver with well nigh dread anticipation of what every thoughtful person must recognize as being a rapidly approaching time of humanity reaping of the whirlwind which is the natural result of very careless sowing we must find a foundation of some degree of steadiness do you recall the story of joseph he of the childish coat of many colors and a father perchance too fond of one among so 30 many sons these brothers so very modern who say to one another behold this drea dreamer cometh 0 1 1 dr vance a bit facetiously says they mean the fool has arrived but do you re recall callagain again that the day came when the dreamer controlled the granaries of egypt it is uncomfortable to find ones self beholden we may say to a dreamer may we speculate with you a inor rn orient nent suppose a man equipped with an adequate background and a sufficient plan stepped to the front today with a remedy and warring nations could or would by a species of magic accept the remedy the tired world would become his slave and then another basis of difficulty would be set up history reveals but one who ever came with a remedy which contained within its virility only that which was best for all mankind and that man the powers nailed to a cross dr vance quotes a realistic philosopher who says the evils of the modern world have come upon us because we have descended from the perspective of birds to that of the frogs he also quotes commander byrd who in seeking men for his perilous flights declares he seeks those who combine the spirit of the dreamer with the quality of the fighter Js Is it too much to dream Is it too ton divine to imagine 7 Is it too great to hope you who glance across the table into the eager eyes of a boy or up at the face of a fair daughter just entering the pathway to the great outer world for what do you long in the coming new year what more than the dreams that lead to courage steadfastness and endurance only one possesses and will vill share to the full measure of human need one ideal one dream one steadily burning torch to illumine the pathway before you and to pass on to these dearer to you than life itself these must have a sure guide an unfailing refuge j still mounts the dream on shining pinion still the dull distrust which shall have ultimate dominion dream or dust 0 the singing man keeps his shop in his throat spanish proverb provell 1 1 0 guiltiness would speak though tongues were out of use shakespeare
