Show talented student earns masters degree decree in music the following article tells the story of interesting career cl 15 a young man who has gained rl ignition tion in the musical world as result of his big inborn talent plus a lot of hard work during the past few years james McCort mcconkie kie iq the son of judge and mrs oscar of salt lake gity city and lid idon son of mrs lucinda redd of monticello althou although Alth cugh h the axer aises were held on may 28 we did not receive the mit cit to accompany the story in time for public publican icat aton on last week but we believe it will le L e interesting news to friends of mr mcconkie who who read our paper and who well remember his fine programs of last summer when he was vas spending a bewall fe few wall weeks at the home of hs h s grandi mother and his aunt miss isabelle redd needless to say his relatives and friends rejoice with him in the honor bestowed recently the story as outlined in the salt lake tribune f follows major figure on a program that presented him not only as a fin shed pian pianist st but as composer and condu conductor actor as well james mcconkie was given hs degree or of master of music from mccune school of music and art tuesday night at graduation exercises held at the assembly hall the presentation tation of the degree was made by sylvester Q cannon with a preliminary address given by tracy Y cannon director of the school it has not perhaps happened before that a graduate has furnished the music for the entire commencement program as mr mcconkie has done here during his recent school work the talented young pianist has devoted much of his time to composition and the several instrumental pieces and song numbers he has achieved were presented last night by a group of leading vocalists and musicians and choral groups conducted by mr mcconkie who also played his accompaniments for the singers one of the most pretentious of the compositions a trio for strings in four movements was rendered with f feeling eeling by an ensemble comprising reginald J H beales violin william C hogenson viola and joseph C clive cello the choral number the congo in which mr mcconkie had expressed something of the savagery of the native races received effective treatment by a mens chorus with two piano accompaniment compani ment the players beings being lois whyte and grant johannsen E munroe husbands gave a reading of the vachel lindsay forum as a preface to the chorus presentation A second chorus alleluia wr written itten as a fugue for mixed voices and sung by the east high school A capella choir also received approval A t group of six songs strongly co contrasted nt ii mood were excellently interpreted by such vocal artists as mrs A E bowen opera soprano richard P 1 I 1 condie tenor and vernie swenson baritone an especially dramatic setting was given the moving sonar the wanderings of a deranged mind sung by mrs bowen and the accompaniment to mr con dies first number A dirge shelleys Shel leys words was quite unusual music mr McCon kies compositions throughout revealed a modern and individual expression |
