Show the caravan is to town do we who represent the lusi iusi acsa interests of monticello want our visitors from neighboring bowns owns and pities to the cast of us to view the unsightly spots thit th it stil remain on our nia ma n street the san juan record has been much interested in the clenn up campaign of several weeks ago and was was dinst in promoting the undertaking which brought together gether t many of the he loyal and civic minded persons who took part in the campaign we voiced opinion and gave credit to those who volunteered to help or who were appointed to various tasks and we stressed the further need to complete the job so well begun we promised more intention to the subject and have nade attempt to interest main street businessmen and those who are responsible for civic betterment and improvements to furnish refuse cans in order that the careless habits which now prevail may be corrected and a better system be established As yet nothing has been done continued on page 13 THE CARAVAN continued from page one as far as we know and it would I 1 seem that unless an effort is made between now and next tuesday when the visitors and delegates announced in another column arrive our main alain street will not make a very good impression on them we are always glad to call attention to the improvements and the fine things our merchants are doing and we point with pride to the new buildings and the fine appearance pe arance of many homes where landscape gardening has transformed the setting into something finer and more beautiful we call attention now to the very attractive front yard of the county court house with its lawn 1 of beautiful green which is so carefully tended by the caretaker john wesley norton but in sad contrast to this is the unsightly litter through which one must pass which is scattered on both sides of the walk on the adjoining property to the south and even in front of the court house at times as well as all along the opposite I 1 side of the main block on main street we therefore make appeal thru these columns for an individual effort among the property owners and businessmen to each be responsible for the space in front of their property or stores not only on the three main blocks of our town but in all adjoining side streets through which our visitors may pass and let this effort become a habit in order that through the remaining weeks of the summer those who pass through monticello will remember it for its cleanliness as well as its scenic beauty yours f for or a finer and better town in all ways and at all times the san juan record publisher and staff |
