Show checkup check up on tree planting in utah now under way A statewide state wide survey of the farm tree planting program is being inaugurated augu rated by the utah state agricultural ri college reports J whitney floyd extension forester this year marks the year of the distribution of small forest trees from the college and the plan is to determine the present survival of the trees that were planted more than 2000 questionnaires concerning trees have been prepared and mailed to the farmer cooperators in the 29 counties of utah by the state extension office in 1934 a check was made after five years of tree planting and a survival of 60 per cent was shown that study covered trees on farms the tree planting project is sponsored by the utah extension service in cooperation with the VS U S department of agriculture the purpose of encouraging 1 farm people to plant windbreaks 15 and woodlots wood lots the trees are grown in the forest nursery at the college at logan and distributed tri buted each spring the cost to the cooperator is approximately one half the growing bundling and shipping expenses the interest in the project has increased each year since it was started says professor rloyd floyd reports show that trees were planted in 1930 and more than in 1939 this past season more inore than trees were set out in 31 demonstration plantings in 15 counties under the supervision of the county agricultural agents the main kinds hinds of trees planted are siberian elm russian olive green ash blue spruce east ared dg ed cedar black walnut black y at at and golden willow |
