Show fire destroys san juan high school early sunday the san juan high school has burned down that beautiful and stately building standing on the hill at the north end of town is gone at AM sunday morning president joseph B harris went to the seminary b building west of the high school building to prepare the building for a special meeting when he got within yards or so of the high school he swelled smelled smoke and on looking he discovered it cama from the high school building ile he roused the nearest neighbors tolling them af pf y the fire before many seconds had bad passed the whole town was there loing all they could to save the building A group of men were working from the west side of the building when an explosion occurred within the building injuring aroe brown and carl eisenberger these men were taken to the camp for medical aid both suffered scalp wounds from the flying g ass it was very noticeable the splendid way in which the camp officers and boys came to help and were among the first to arrive on tle the I 1 scene the cause of the fire is unknown un knowla I 1 that the san juan hagli school building was treasured by the people of blanding was evidenced by the number of people who gathered there to assist there was scarcely a dry eye in the group as the people saw the flames the beautiful building the main part of the building was erected in 1929 under the supervision ision of joseph C alonson SI onson architect of salt lake city the east aas wing was completed last year under the directly direct la of henry aston also alo a salt sal I lake ake city architect the san juan high school building was a monument to the dreams and efforts of such pioneers continued on page 8 SAN JUAN HIGH FIRE continued from page 1 of education as supt bupt it 11 lloyd if arisen joseph B harris A R lyman and others its achievements have been largely due to the unceasing efforts and loyalty of principal E 0 biggs and his splendid faculty although the san juan high school building stands in ruins the spirit of the school is still very much alive and the principal and faculty are determined to carry on and hold school the fhe remaining two of the school term arrangements have been made to hold high school in the church basement the district school basement and the relief society if necessary the junior prom held last friday night was the last school activity to he be held beld in the building little did the people realize that night would be the last fast chance to dance on that smooth floor the annual high school play through the keyhole was to have been presented there neat friday night but will now be presented in the church amusement hall it is reported that the loss was vas vz al which is covered by insurance of which had bad been in force but a short time it is reported that the workers succeeded in removing one piano from the upper floor but it is said it is bady warped and blistered they also saved one desk a number of chairs and some disused books it is reported that the seventh and eighth grades will use the seminary from 7 until noon and the upper grades from noon until late in the afternoon the principal difficulty seems to be a shortage of books all textbooks that can be spared have been sent down front from the AI Al high school and other lesson material is being reproduced on mimeographs mimeo graphs and ad typewriters |
