scientists would save totem poles in alaska scientific treatment Is being given to the last totem poles still standing in the indian villages along the coast of british columbia and alaska so that these ancient emblems will be preserved says the san francisco chronicle most ot of the hundred odd remaining totem poles known to be on their original sites tire anre cleaned oiled painted and repaired so as to stand for many years house poles grave monuments and other carved relics ot of the indians are being treated in the same w way ay there are numerous small carved totems throughout the british columbia and alaska region and these are being preserved by government experts some of the tallest totems found tave have measured nearly 70 f feet et the tallest still in existence being at jasper alberta where it stands 65 feet high with a base 9 feet underground this totem was transplanted from the queen charlotte islands
