Show The Crime Wave During the lean years Immediately following the world war we were told there w&j an unusual wave of crime throughout America. Some attributed it to the environment of the war, some to the financial straits of the people in those years of business stagnation, and still others declared it to be the result of the Volstead act. Perhaps there was tsome iiferit in all of these reasons, each may liave bad a bearing oti the situation but as the financial stagnation of 1U20 and 1921 has pass, ed and the war has ended almost a, 4 dvcade we cannot believe either of theae had very much to do with crime. Without doubt the people have violated viol-ated the Volstead act more than all other lawfl on our statue books, and perhaps the latter baa bad more to do with common violations of the law than th others, but still the reason for the crime wave Is unsolved. It seems this wave of 10 years ago has constantly grown until It has recabed tho proportions of a typhoon. The headlines of our dally papers are crowded with captions of the most startling tragedies from far and near. Time was when there was a few bands of outlaws remotely scattered through the country with hiding placts deep in the rugged mountains, who would occasionally oc-casionally invade a village or town and" disappeared for a reason. These men were known as wholly bad and kept to themselves, but we find so many criminals now.a days, we should expect ,1o find I hem alina-t any place. Men and women too who have been highly esteemed and above suspicion. Burglary, murder and rapine are so prevalent in many cities almost daily, that it is time to take account of this terrible condition, find the cause and aet about to fortify against and retndy I 1t- Some of the recent crimes are bo cruel and revolting it taxes the mind of man to conceive a motif for committing com-mitting them. We do not attempt to give an answer ans-wer to the reason for so much crime, perhaps It is a combination of many reasons but we do think one of them Is the abbreviated llfe o many are trying to live, trying to be what they are not, trying to have things they are not able to have and to keep up a i falae Impression of themselves in the I minds of other people. |
