Some attributed it to the environment of the war, some to the financial straits of the people in those years of business stagnation, and still others declared it to be the result of the Volstead act. Perhaps there was tsome iiferit in all of these reasons, each may liave bad a bearing oti the situation but as the financial stagnation of 1U20 and 1921 has pass, ed and the war has ended almost a, 4 dvcade we cannot believe either of theae had very much to do with crime. Without doubt the people have viol-ated the Volstead act more than all other lawfl on our statue books, and perhaps the latter baa bad more to do with common violations of the law than th others, but still the reason for the crime wave Is unsolved. It seems this wave of 10 years ago has constantly grown until It has recabed tho proportions of a typhoon. The headlines of our dally papers are crowded with captions of the most startling tragedies from far and near. Time was when there was a few bands of outlaws remotely scattered through the country with hiding placts deep in the rugged mountains, who would oc-casionally invade a village or town and" disappeared for a reason. These men were known as wholly bad and kept to themselves, but we find so many criminals now.a days, we should expect ,1o find I hem alina-- t any place. Men and women too who have been highly esteemed and above suspicion. Burglary, murder and rapine are so prevalent in many cities almost daily, that it is time to take account of this terrible condition, find the cause and aet about to fortify against and retndy I 1t- - Some of the recent crimes are bo cruel and revolting it taxes the mind of man to conceive a motif for com-mitting them. We do not attempt to give an ans-wer to the reason for so much crime, perhaps It is a combination of many reasons but we do think one of them Is the abbreviated llfe o many are trying to live, trying to be what they are not, trying to have things they are not able to have and to keep up a i falae Impression of themselves in the minds of other people. Capital's Police Women Stand High in First Aid Members of the Women's Bureau of the District of Columbia police department recently completed the Red Cross first aid course. This Is perhaps the first women's group of the kind to be awarded the special first aid arm Insignia by the Ameri-can Red Cross In token of comple-tion of the training. The Red Cross in the past year qualified 24,812 persons In first aid and awarded certificates to mem bers of police and fir departments, industrial groups and utilities em-ployee all over the United 8tate. i SOCIAL FOR PARENT . A morning hour was actually set aside for the break-fast meal. But look at it now! Some of us don't eeem to appreciate its these modern days. Tell us what the family had for breakfast during the past month and we'll tell you whether the family is a happy on. There Is nothing like the cheering spirit of a good, warm, unhurried breakfast. Why, getting good breakfaats is a very important function ot the kitchen "work-hop.- " A hot breakfast tastily served and every member of the fam-ily is equipped to enjoy doing a good day's work. Breakfasts are easier, too, these dava. Increnlous minds have provided us with electric toasters, electric waffle irons, even electric egg cookers, ind prepared cereals. All these devices aro handy and wonderful if used con-servatively. Surely the inventors in-tended that more time could be spent in enjoying breakfast if less time wae spent in ths mechanics of prepara-tion. Even breakfasts should be secretly planned several days in advance. Here Is a sample iiieal family breakfast: Grapefruit, breakfast appetizer. Cereal, hot. cooked. t Ees, Scrambled or soft cooked. Hot biscuits or toast and jam. Coffee (for adults). In thirty-fiv- e minutes, no longer, all is ready! While the salted water is heating for the cereal, start the coffee, prepare the grapefruit and set Um table. And let's have the break-fast table in a light cheery spot with a bowl of flowers or fruit In the cen-ter. Next, finish preparing the cereal. Finely granulated cereals and partial-ly cooked flakes, wheat or oats will be well cooked in twenty-fiv- e to thirty minutes. Start the oven heating for the biscuits, make them quickly, the quicker the better! While the biscuits are baking prepare the eggs. That's all a good hot cereal brea-kfastfruit first, hot bread or toast and jam for dessert and a hot bever-age, is just ideal. It you would like a guide called Five Essentials for Good Breakfasts that will help you to keep varia-tions in the breakfast meal, drop me a line and I'll be glad to mail you one Martha Meade, Home Service Bu-reau, Sperry Flour Co., San Francisco. The crook, police claim, rides in busses and cars, lis-tens to private conversations and acts upon them.
