Show Gen. Weiler Retires After 35 Years Service With Guard Service, thirty-five years of service to his state and nation, draws to a close Feb. 28, for Brig. Gen. William F. Weiler of Utah National Guard. He's living now at 2494 So. 13th E. His service began in 1917 when Gen. Weiler enlisted as a private in the 145th Field Artillery, Ar-tillery, Utah NG. He was on active duty with that unit until 1919, seeing combat service in World War I. He returned to the 145th in 1923 as First Lieutenant. Lieu-tenant. He was promoted to Captain by 1924; Major in 1932; and Lt. Colonel in 1937. Appointed Ap-pointed commanding officer of the 115th Engineers (C) Regiment, Regi-ment, 40th Infantry Division, in July of 1939, he earned his promotion pro-motion to Colonel in 1940. Shortly afterward, Gen. Weiler was inducted into Federal Service. Ser-vice. His World War II service took him first to Hawaii and then to Africa where he assumed as-sumed command of the 591st Engineers Boat Regiment. With it as a nucleus, the general organized or-ganized a Provisional Embarkation Embar-kation Group which handled transfer of the 7th Army on the invasion of Southern France. Joining the 7th Army in France for the remainder of the European Campaign, Gen. Weiler was at Innsbruk, Austria when the war ended. He was relieved from Federal Service in 1945, and assigned the Command Com-mand Officer post for the XLm Corps Artillery of Utah NG in 1946. Federally recognized recog-nized as a Brigadier General in 1947, he was assigned his present pres-ent post in 1950. Gen. Weiler was born in Evanston, Wyo. in 1896. He married the former Octavo Holmgren of Bear River City in 1924 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Tem-ple. They have three sons and a daughter: W. F. Weiler, Jr., Queed H., Peter M. and Constance Con-stance Weiler. William Jr. and Queed live in Salt Lake City with their families: Peter is in his third year at Stanford University Uni-versity and Constance is living (Continued on Page 2) Brig. Gen. W. F. Referring to the General's wish to go fishing, Mrs. Weiler in talking with the News Bulletin, Bul-letin, said: "He's always been busy working with the Guard in his free time, and he's never really had a good vacation. We're glad he's finally going to get one." Her statement carried the full meaning of self-sacrifice and service which has earned Gen. Weiler the respect and esteem of all who know him. |
