Show Horses Please Fair Folk Entertainment at the Utah State Fair Horse Show last week ranged from sophisticated fine harness horses to temperamental five-gaited five-gaited animals to a rough speedy never - mind - the -fancy-trappings trailer race with competition close and furious. Stonewall Glamour's win in the five gaited stake Friday night was not much, of a surprise to anyone, as the Flint Farm entry has won nearly every event in which she has been entered all across the country. Gay Diversion, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Bailey Bird, was second. Mrs. Bailey Bird rode her horse Black Satin to victory in the five gaited amateur rider class. This class was outstanding this year in the unusually large number of entries. Another Flint farm entry, Stone, wall Golden Light, copped first place in the fine harness stake. Mr. and Mrs. Bird took home yet another trophy because of the efforts of Duchess of York, with Jimmie Little up, in the three-gaited three-gaited event In the children's event, Ralph Continued on Page 7 HORSES PLEASE FAIR FOLK Continued from Page 1 Jones' horse Chico was coached to victory by his daughter. First night jumpers class was won by Blinda Lewis who rode Dr. Rulien's horse Gurrina to beat two of her own animals! Arabian stake was taken by Dr. E. Dan McArthur, riding in native Arabian costume on his own horse Hampton. The western pleasure event was split into two divisions. Cleo Walton Wal-ton rode Sugar4 to win the men's class, while Mary Sayers finished in the lead for the ladies on Red Ace. Mrs. L. H. Strong presented a demonstration of her high-stepping Hackney ponies which drew much applause from the grandstand. grand-stand. These beautiful animals were shown Thursday evening, pulling a four-wheeled cart. Speed, and speed only, was the determining factor in the trailer race, with riders sacrificing safety to getting their mounts out of the trailer, saddled and bridled, out and around the track and back into the trailer. Saddles were not all cinched tightly enough and one rider found his saddle slipping off his horse and himself sailng gracefully grace-fully through the air. Winners in the trailer event by a mere two seconds were the representatives rep-resentatives of the Saddlers Riding club. Idaho Equestrians were second sec-ond with Utah Rangers and the ladies' Silver Spurs also in the race. |
