Show Changes Mind About Angels LEVI EDGAR YOUNG TELLS TALE ON DALLIN SCULPTURE A hitherto unpublished story about the late Cyrus Dallin, J noted sculptor, was released Sunday evening by Levi Edgar Young, member of the first council of Seventy of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Bryan ward Sacrament service. In his subtle dry humor, Mr. Young retold the incident he heard from Mr. Dallin prior to the sculptor's death. The noted artist grew up in Springville, then moved to New York. j While he was visiting his mother in the Utah county city, he was asked by President Wilfred Woodruff to create a statue of an angel to be placed on the capstone of the temple, which was then in the process of being built. Young Cyrus stormed home and told his mother, "I refused to do it. Don't believe in angels. Lot of foolishness, angels flying around with wings." , At this statement, Mrs. Dallin threw up her hands in amazement, amaze-ment, rushed to a desk and chose a piece of paper which she thrust toward her son. "So you don't believe in angels?" she asked. "Then, pray, why did you address this letter in such a manner?" Cyrus read the salutation he had written . . . "My dear angel Mother" and changed his mind about designing an angel for the capstone of the temple. |
