Eisenhower's personal signature. It was a reply to her congratulatory congratu-latory letter to him on inauguration inaugura-tion day. Mrs. Dunfield's letter read as follows: "Dear Mr. President: "I am just a humble American mother with two young sons growing grow-ing up and so happy to be living in this wonderful country of ours. "Our hearts are so full of love and admiration for you and Mrs. Eisenhower. The humble and sincere sin-cere prayer which you offered causes us all to feel and know that a Divine Power has directed you to this high position which you ' assumed this day. "If we, as Americans, can display this same attitude, we need have no Jear or the ruture. we can ana ao pledge ourselves in word and deed, to further your "Crusade for Freedom.' "Please accept our heartfelt congratulations con-gratulations and may God bless you both. "Sincerely, "Mrs. Howard Dunfield." The following reply was received: re-ceived: "I have never been more deeply moved or more aware of the immensity im-mensity of our tasks than on inauguration in-auguration day. The decisive fact now is the spirit and the determination determ-ination with which we unitedly bend to our tasks. "Thank you most sincerely for your encouraging message. (Signed) "Dwight D. Eisenhower." "It's worth a million dollars to me," said Mrs. Dunfield, surprised not only with the reply, but the promptness of the reply. "I will keep it among my treasured memoirs." |
