Show A HOD U AfiUOGE Well, sir, two senior citizens of Sugar House are men who take great pains and pride in their jobs. And Sugar House folk, to a man, should take pride in these two who do so much to keep the narrow, traffic clogged streets of Sugar House spic and span. They are Herbert Astle and Peter Smith, both becoming as much a landmark as the fire house or Pehrson's store. Both Herb and Pete are nearing 70 years of age. But unless he is really under the weather, you can see either one at work six days a week, sweeping sweep-ing up bits of scattered paper, dust, debris or any other litter that would otherwise be blown about the streets. No more faithful workers ever swept a street clean or kept their territories free of mess. Pete does the 21st South street from Eleventh to Seventh East, and Herb keeps Eleventh East clean from Roosevelt avenue to the D & RG railroad tracks, and 21st South swept from Eleventh East to 13 th East. Indeed, these two men deserve a nod for their zeal in keeping up a job that, to say the least, is thankless to most. Incidentally, Pete was really sick one day this week when The News Bulletin took pictures, or he'd have been smiling back at you, just as Herb Astle is doing above. And now it is time to nudge the city street department for Continued on Page 2 NOD -'N-flUDGE Cbntinoed from Page 1 NOT getting on the ball and doing what has been promised. The Sugar House chamber of commerce maintains several park, ing lots for the convenience of its patrons and employes of the business busi-ness area. Also for the convenience of police who seldmon have to tag an over-long parked car. Furthermore, there are NO PARKING METERS to plagua the area. But the city street department has fallen down. Fallen badly when it did NOT keep its word and level off the bumps and fill the holes that are bad enough to make wrecks of most cars and cause civic minded motorists to shy away from the parking lots which are in such bad shape. Commissioners Romney and White are fully aware of the condition, con-dition, yet they are mighty lagging lag-ging in their promised follow-up to smooth these lots out so that people will park conveniently where they should and not along the narrow streets. |
