Show TRAFFIC AIRED AT MEET Speaking at a joint meeting of Sugar House chamber of commerce and Rotary club today, Seymor (Sam) Taylor, city traffic engineer, and Vernon Jorgensen, city planning plan-ning director, pointed out pertinent problems in the traffic and parking park-ing situation and suggested a solution. solu-tion. Taylor, referring to the critical traffic situation said, "There must be an immediate change in respect to the flow of traffic coming on to Highland Drive at the semaphore sema-phore at 21st South and 11 East!" He further noted that a system of morning and evening traffic could be regulated with construction construc-tion of three lanes with traffic coming in two lanes during the morning, and reversed for the evening eve-ning rush hours. He continued that restricted parking during this period would be necessary along these streets, and that the widening of 21st South and 11th East was imperitive. He also suggested to the group that reduction of pedestrian lanes on 21st South and 11 and 9th East would alleviate much of the traffic congestion in that channel.. . Jorgensen- reiterated Taylor's statement on the widening of 21st South and 11 East saying: "Widening of 21st South and 11 East is a necessity if Sugar House is to continue it's pace of rapid growth." "Sugar House is a growing retail re-tail service center, and should be emphazised as such, not industrialized," industri-alized," Jorgensen said, "It will remain re-main a shopping center only if off-street parking and proper street system is adequate to handle traffic. But once cars get there they must have a place to park." The group met at noon at the Beau Brummel cafe, and the chamber cham-ber of commerce was in charge of the pragram. Vern Mackay, president presi-dent conducted.' The membership committee, under the direction of Steve Richards, Rich-ards, introduced several guests. The meeting was held jointly with Rotary because of the visit of the president of Rotary International Inter-national which fell on the regular chamber date. |
