SBi.iHa.S(Mitfti3 The southeast and sons of Utah Pioneers lost a real friend when Archie Rae McFarland, well known livestock man, was called home Monday. Bishop Joseph L. Worthlin, presiding pre-siding bishop of the LDS church, paid tribute at his funeral. He was a real philanthropist. When the Centennial Trekkers in 1947 needed a refrigeration truck to cross the plains, to keep deer, antelope and buffalo meat fresh, with other supplies, he, with his son, Paul, gave one over to Harold H. Jenson, providing he go with the truck, quite a contrast con-trast to pioneer original trip. Dorothy Kimball Keddington, termed "Sweetheart of SUP," and Culbert Keddington sang solo numbers. Archie Rae McFarland, 62, 1194 5th East, president of Archie McFarland Mc-Farland and Son Packing Co., and well known business and civic leader, died Monday at his home after a short illness. Mr. McFarland started in the packing business with his father, ?, Archie McFarland, whom he helped found a small packing plant which archie r. Upon the death of his father, he took over the plant and enlarged it to one of the finest in the west. He also founded the Pavet'.e Feed Yards at Payette, Ida., and was well known among western livestockmen. Mr. McFarland was among the leaders in founding the first livestock live-stock shows in Utah. He was born Feb. 9, 1S90, at West Weber, Weber county, a son of Archie and Emiline Nelson Mc Farland. His grandparents were among the first pioneers to come to Utah. He attended West high school, where he played football and was I a member of the band which made a trip to the California Fair under the direction of Col. Webb. Mr. McFarland married Sadie Tripp. They later were divorced. He later married Ethel Wright Bell, who, with her son and daughter, Robert Bell and Mrs. Barbara Bell Hogan, all of Salt Lake, survive him. Also surviving are his sons and daughter by the first marriage: Archie Paul McFarland and Airs. Virginia McFarland Henroid. Salt Lake City; Nelson Rae McFarland, Baker, Oregon; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. |
