That is one in every 6.5 persons. per-sons. In the state there were 537 lives claimed by cancer. Approximately Approx-imately 80 per cent of those cancer can-cer cases reported, resulted in death. "It is tragic, but many of these deaths could be avoided," according ac-cording to Mrs. Emil de Neuf, state commander for the American Ameri-can Cancer Society. "The incidence inci-dence of death from cancer when it has progressed to some degree before it is detected, is from 80 to 90 if detected early-deaths early-deaths result in only 25 of the cases. If caught early, cancer in many instances can be cured. During the observance of Cancer Can-cer Control month during April in Utah and the rest of the nation, na-tion, early symptoms of cancer are being publicized so those who have them may see their doctors for the detection of cancer. The story was carried to 300,000 persons during 1948. The 1949 fund drive being conducted con-ducted in every county of the state during April is to provide funds to set up free cancer detection de-tection centers, to carry on the educational campaign, all by volunteer vo-lunteer workers, and also to provide funds for research into the cause and possible cure of cancer. The public is asked to cooperate in their local community com-munity cancer drive. |
