Show EDITORIAL In Favor of High School, But Not at Prison Site THE CURRENT controversy regarding a high school on the state park property at the prison site has given an untrue picture, at certain times, of the attiude of this paper, the SUP and the Sugar House Chamber of Commerce toward a South East High School. Proponents of She state park at the prison site are very much in favor of a high school in the southeast, but not at the prison site. There are a few very important points which f T stand in favor of this viewpoint which have not yet been mentioned. First of all, where are the figures which will show us wlhere the center of the new population to be served by the school is located? A planning authority has said that the proper way to look for a school site does not start with just looking for vacant property, but by making an accurate survey sur-vey of families which, and will have, children of high school age. Many people believe that a survey of future population popu-lation growth will show that tlhe prison site is not centrally located for a high school. Secondly, has the school board considered that areas now in the county in this southeast section may one day be in- . corporated in the city? Not many years ago the Sugar House section was in the county. Many citizens say it will not be long before many heavily populated areas east and south of Sugar House will become city instead of county. The tihird point is that high school students from the upper east bench and the "foothills," plus those who live in the area of 27th South, are the ones who need a new high school. V The Board of Education mentions the 5th East area, which is now adequately served by Soutlh High School. East and South High .Schools have for years been able to accommodate students from the Sugar House area. The situation did not become acute until new residential areas started developin" Those areas are" the ones which should be served with a centrally-located high school. Speaking for many individuals and groups, The Bulletin wishes to say that we are wholeheartedly in favor of a Southeast South-east High School, and we want it as soon as possible. But we honestly and firmly believe that a better, more central location loca-tion can be found than at the prison site. |
