Show EDITORIAL Southeast Streets Need Repair NO car deserves the treatment it gets when its driver takes it over the streets in southeast Salt Lake. Chuck holes deep and wide enough to shake the passengers' teeth, and do considerable damage to the car, are so numerous on our heavily traveled roads that it is difficult to avoid them. Both the .city and county street departments have been negligent in keeping the streets in good repair, and everyone who drives a car in this entire southeast area is considerably bothered with the situation. It is not only hard on the cars and their occupants, but it is definitely conductive to accidents as drivers swerve their cars away from chuck holes into the path of oncoming vehicles. Also, on a heavily pock-road, the driver is often so concerned with dodging the holes that he does not give full attention to his driving. It is a real task, we know, to keep the streets in repair. Snowfalls come and go, moisture is usually heavy on the streets, and road crews have a lot of territory to cover. But too often, big holes are exposed for weeks not days before the street departments (city or county) get around to them. Is it not possible for street department officials to survey their roads more often, and for their crews to get out more often? Is it not possible for the crews to be more efficient, and cover more territory each day that they work? Is it not possible to use a more permanent fill mixture than is now being used? These are problems to be solved by the street departments, but they should know that the driving public cannot afford to damage dam-age their cars for four to five months out of every year when the trouble can be largely overcome with some diligent effort and planning. |
