Show Friendly Utah? k FEW ignorant Utahns have taken the trouble to cover up the lower part of their license plates which roads, "The Friendly State." It is very evident that they do not believe in the sincerity sin-cerity or truth of the motto, and therefore desire to cover it up. They are part of a loud-mouthed minority who-sees who-sees nothing- "friendly" about Utah, and therefore protest the adoption of that motto. If there is any guilt, however, about Utah not being friendly, it is pretty well evident who the unfriendly ones are. By their actions and by their words they have made a silent confession that they do not wish to be friendly. Rulon S. Howells of the Utah State Department of Publicity showed that the majority of people dealing with-the with-the tourist trade indicated that tourists liked the motto and agreed that Utah is a friendly state. Moreover, Mr. Howells pointed out that the motto generally had made Utahns more conscious of the need to be friendly because of the widespread publicity given to the license plate description. Whether we keep "The Friendly State" on next year's plates, or use some other motto, it would be well for all of us to adopt a course of action which would earn for us the reputation of being friendly. |
