Show S. H. Stake Operetta, 'The Mocking Bird," Hailed as Great Success Bonnie Jean Ball, were two of the perkiest, most vivacious gals on stage. Rex Stallings played Pierre, and drew several laughs on his solo about the moon and owls and goblins. LaRae Taggart added more comedy with her prankish fortune-telling. Two Jeans Chidester and Dunn played Janette and Ja-votte, Ja-votte, respectively. By Virginia Baker Playing to large audiences at Irving High School on Wednesday Wednes-day Thursday and Friday evenings eve-nings of last week was the Sugar Sug-ar House Stake operetta, "The Mocking Bird." Conducted by LaVar S. Isaacson, who was assisted as-sisted by Kathryn Fairbanks, the cast of 80 turned in a very enjoyable performance. Raymond L. Bergman was drama director and was in charge of the very appropriate scenery. The lighting effects were achieved by Afton Ahmet, Albert Bean and their assist ants. The music is the most "hum-able" since Gilbert and Sullivan. The mussette girls' dance was the most swingable. DeLora Garrett was a vivacious coquette co-quette in this number. Rodge: Gunn's stage presence and acting act-ing ability, coupled with his competent singing voice, brought the role of the weakling weak-ling governor to life. LEADS Jewel Johnson sang the leading lead-ing role. Her excellently trained voice was always pleasant to listen to. Handsome, husky Glade Peterson played opposite Miss Johnson. Hal Charon, as a French patriot, led the New Orleans citizens against the Spanish invaders. His solo in the third act was hU best. Cornell Green created such a hateful villain in Maxime that even some of the cast were glad o see him get his just desserts. The marquise, a wealthy flirt, was portrayed by Sylva Hen-ricksen, Hen-ricksen, and Jack G. Kemker .--sang the role of Don Aurelio- There were not just one, but ' two sea captains in this mu--deal. Kindly Capt. Beloit was Clyde Furner, and swashbuckling swashbuck-ling pirate LeFarge was Haynes Thomas. VIVACIOUS Lenore and the countess, iplayed by Merelyn Gray and |
