Working The 40-hour railroad work week, which goes into effect Sept. 1, will result in the Saturday Satur-day closing of the Rio Grande freight station at Sugar House, according to an announcement by A. E. Perlmam Rio Grande general manager. The Saturday closing is the result of recommendation of an emergency board appointed by President Truman, which brought about an argument between be-tween major railroads and the 16 non-operating railroad labor unions, he declared. The agreement,- establishing a 40-hour work week, was signed March 19, 1949. Normal Operation Normal operation of trains will not be affected, but station operations will generally be on the same basis as Sundays and holidays, Perlman said. Specifically, Spe-cifically, this means that no less-than-carload freight will be handled on those days, although carload freight and passenger business will be handled. As far as possible, freight business will be handled to accommodate ac-commodate the new station schedule, Perlman said, and where necessary special arrangements ar-rangements will be made to handle han-dle products affected by seasonal sea-sonal or specific time considerations. consider-ations. Saturdays will be exempt ex-empt from storage and demurrage demur-rage charges to the same extent that Sundays and hlidays are now, he said. |
