Show Community Salutes Leaders of B.P.W., Chamber, City for Plaza Improvement A dream of community beautification which started in April neared fruition this week as final steps were taken on the clean-up and improvement of Sugar House's famed plaza and monument. In reviewi' Bulletin articles tracing development of the plan it was noted that the idea originated with the Business and Professional Pro-fessional Women of Sugar House who saw the need to remake the plaza to fulfill itg original purpose as an historical monument and an attractive center for southeast Salt Lake. City commissioners commis-sioners visited the plaza in April and promised cooperation in removal re-moval of the clock, garbage cans, guy wires and other unsightly appurtenances. Miss Thelma Garff, with public affairs committee members Mrs. John Barnes, Mrs. Audrey Jensen and Mrs. Lillian Royle, spearheaded the drive. , The June 6 Bulletin told of the 51 i" r - BEFORE This picture was taken June 4, 1947, as beautification of plaza started. Glade and the city commission, commis-sion, as well as the Sugar House Chamber of Commerce, for their active aid in making beautification beautifica-tion possible. "Everyone cooperated coop-erated so well we kept on going," go-ing," Miss Garff said. Fnal steps in beautifying the monument are the placing of placques on the two vacant square insets on either side of the monument, the installation of an attractive garden bench, completion of tile and plumbing work in the fountains and planting plant-ing of a few more shrubs. The two placques will represent, in relief, the old sugar mill and a pioneer center of commerce. According to Miss Garff, more than S6000 will have been spent on beautification of the plaza and monument when the project is completed. Two organizations, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-dav Saints and the Sugar House Chamber of Commerce, have donated $1000 each. Architect Lorenzo Young originally or-iginally designed the plaza and monument and Millard F. Malin sculptured the monument Plans for the formal program" to honor all who contributed funds and work will be announced an-nounced later, Miss Garff said. f , - , ' " ' - ' i ;,;,:? ; ; ' , !: f v: , ; .
