Show The Gospel of Work THE time has come for American people to stage a campaign cam-paign to extoll the virtues of work honest labor. The campaign should also expose the evils of the "gimme" philosophy philos-ophy under which we have been laboring for so long. Labor organizations shout for 48 hours of wages for 40 hours of work; radio programs are featuring giveaways and free stuff almost every hour; communities are leaning upon the federal government to complete projects which the citizens citi-zens could handle themselves; and people generally are talking talk-ing in, terms of pensions, old-age benefits, free medical care, instead of the majesty of work. Many segments of our society declare abhorrence of the socialistic state, and yet their acts are. taking them there in the shortest possible time. The desire to get something for nothing manifests itself in extensive gambling, desire for more pay for less work, seeking shortcuts to success, petty and bigtime thievery, and dishonesty. Many of our current troubles can be traced to the "gimme" philosophy America's role of leadership in world affairs demands that Americans be industrious and frugal rather than lazy and spendthrift. We are living in a world where starvation and poverty reign supreme, and the only way we can share with our needy brothers is to work harder and waste less. The Gospel of Work must be preached in our schools and churches, and praised in our periodicals and information media. Parents should begin teaching this gospel to their children: insisting that they perform necessary tasks around the home, and that they learn work skills by actually performing perform-ing the work. It is not too late, but the sands of time at'e rapidly slipping slip-ping away for all of us to accept our God-given responsibilities of work and service. Let's start now. |
