Show Southeast Clubs Building Plan Gains Support State Board Asked to . Reserve Site Further progress in the establishment estab-lishment of a southeast associated associat-ed clubs building on a portion of the prison site was made this week when John C. Barnes, chairman of the chamber of commerce com-merce committee on this project, appeared before the governor's prison site disposal committee and presented the plan officially. official-ly. Mr. Barnes asked that about an acre and one-half, fronting for 160 feet on 21st So., be reserved re-served for this purpose, and be sold at a price of $1500 per acre to a corporation to be formed for perfecting this project. The plan met with favorable consideration considera-tion by the governor's group, Architect A. 15. Paulson's sketc h of the proposed southeast ci vie clubs building to be located o n the prison site. : : I and plans are now going forward for-ward for the creation of a representative rep-resentative committee of members mem-bers of the chamber, Rotary and Lions clubs to perfect an organization organ-ization plan and really get things started. Up to this point the matter has been in the hands of a chamber committee, appointed by Chamber Cham-ber President Horace A. Sorensen Soren-sen and including Mr. Barnes as chairman, Sam Nicholes and Lincoln Lin-coln Hansen. The plan now is to have the Lions and Rotary clubs of Sugar House each name two members to act with these three in carrying out ,the program. As Mr. Barnes presented the plan at the capitol, a corporation would be formed, and some $50,-000 $50,-000 raised through the sale of shares to the members of the the three interested groups. The building itself, a preliminary sketch of which is shown herewith, here-with, would be the permanent home of these three groups in which they would have their offices of-fices and a central board room. In addition there would be a lounge and a main hall which would seat 300 at tables for banquets ban-quets or luncheons, and probably 400 or more for a general assembly. as-sembly. A complete kitchen would be installed and operated daily for the benefit of members and organizations, or-ganizations, and the facilities of the building would be made available on a rental basis to other responsible organizations. - Another feature of the proposed propos-ed club center would be an information in-formation booth to which tourists tour-ists entering the city from the .east on the main highway would be directed by a road sign, and where they would be given a welcome to Salt Lake and any information they desire. While the three organizations mentioned above are taking the initiative in gettinor the project underway, it would be a credit and a source of pride to the whole community, and business firms of the area will probably be asked ask-ed to lend their support to the enterprise. Administration of the building would be in the hands of a board chosen by members of the stock holding corporation. Mr. Barnes explains. Designed to fill a long felt need in this section, it is hoped the project will receive unanimous support and carried forward to an early realization. |
