Show Fashi on Decrees ! by ROSELLEN CALLAHAN 1 CBS Fashion Editor SO MANY WOMEN these days are in a dither about buying everything they'll need for the duration. They all seem in such a panic ready to accept second best in style and color when they can't find exactly what they wan! because they think this is the. last call for clothes. We wanted to warn you against hoarding, but Harper's Bazaar editor Carme) Snow, when she appeared on Vera Barton's CBS "Songs in the Mood $ I i't r 1 I v 1 1 h 1 J5" ' ; 1 of Love, sain so well exactly what we intended in-tended to. that we will quote a few points she made. First. "We aren't facing fac-ing drastic changes in dress today. Our government govern-ment is concerned con-cerned about shortages a radical change o f silhouette would mean that good Vera Barton clothes would be wasted. So designers have been asked to save yardage and eliminate superfluous details keep skirts short and nar- I row. But don't think that we are 1 going to mourn for things we can't have. It is not American to be a martyr. We are going to invent in-vent new things we can have. And that's why it is not only unpatriotic unpatrio-tic but sheer folly to be a hoarder. Fashions shift with shortages and out of these shortages will be born the new style. Forbidden fruits will soon be labelled old hat. and those silly selfish women who lay in stores are going to be sadly stuck. Fashion will line up on the patriotic side and make them look conspicuous and dowdy in their hoardings." DURING THE SHOWING of Spring collections this year, we noticed that the ensembles rating rat-ing the most applause especially from the males in the audience were simple navy frocks or suits with white touches. Navy was also favored for many dinner dresses. Of shantung, lace and chiffon, a note of gayety was often added with bright appliqued flowers. REDINGOTES" WITH pfihfed frocks are stealing some of the spring suit's thunder. The coats are generally of navy or black jwool, and the little dresses underneath under-neath have a great deal of dressmaker dress-maker detaiL Both are good-look-5ng enough to stand alone. Jean ("Coffee Club") Collins wears her redingote with a number of frocks, and the print, she says, will be perfect for summet' wear with a large straw hat YouH find them hard-working outfits, ready to give you plenty of service. |
