Show Granite Furniture Retains Cage Title r Another Westminster Junior Basket ball Tournament came to an end Thursday evening when Granite Furniture turned back Southeast Furniture in a 21-19 whirland finish. The game gave Granite Furniture the Junior Cage title for the second successive succes-sive year. The first half was all Granite Furniture team with the winners leading 9-3 at one stage of the play both half ended 10-6. Ill the third period the champions cham-pions lost control of the ball on poor passing and Southeast carried car-ried a 13-12 advantage at the close of the quarter. With 45 seconds sec-onds left in the game Mird made a field goal which put Granite in a 14-13 hole. Dick Harmon of Granite dribbled down the floor, tanked a beautiful shot from the foul line, and Granite took the lead 14-15. With just 15 seconds to play. Westerbrook made an alt important foul pitch and the game ended in a knotted score 15-15. 15-15. The extra three minutes period per-iod began with Cal Riggs tanking tank-ing a pretty side shot; Steffansen of Southeast came right with a long shot; Fowles registered a beautiful set-up for the winner, and Bird of Southeast rang up another field goal and the extra period ended 19-19. In the second extra period, Earl Fillmore split the strings with a one handed throw and this suicide basket ended end-ed the 1942 Junior Hoop Season. This was the third time during the season" that Granite Furniture Furni-ture has defeated the Southeast crew but this game was by far the closest. Granite has a much smaller squad but plays a better floor game and sets up an excellent excel-lent zone defense. Bob Westbrook, Bird, and Steffanson were outstanding out-standing for Southeast with Young and Wright helping on their zone. Granite Has Successful Season The Granite squad has an enviable en-viable record. Of 30 games played play-ed this seson Granite has won 27. Their play has been outstanding because of their tight zone defense de-fense and their offense which has been characterized by team work and fast passing. Coach Paul Hansen and Bishop Richards of Granite can well be proud of their record. Members of the champion ..-hip squad are: Forwards, Glen Davis; Cal Riggs, Bob Haar; Cen-te'S, Cen-te'S, Earl Fillmore, Dean McKur-die; McKur-die; Guards Jack Fowels, and Dick larmon. Two learns Share Senior Titles F.dg..il! Seniors also coached hy Paul Hansen, and Clyde Oliver's Oliv-er's Sperry team share the senior division ho.ncrs. These two teams were unable to meet for the senior sen-ior championship. Edgehil' defeated de-feated Sperry's twice during the sear-i n but lost to them in a third tilt which gave Sperry's the second se-cond half title. Edgehill holds the first half championship. |
