Show SELECTIVE SERVICE GIVES U. S. WORLD'S BEST BDUCAT-ARMY BDUCAT-ARMY The Selective Service System is giving the United States the world's best-educated army, according ac-cording to a eecent analysis by the War Department of selectees who have been inducted by July ,1, 1941. More than 90 percent of the men recruited for the National armed forces by the Selective Service System had received a complete grammer school education educa-tion or better, this study showed, while more than 36 percene had high school education or better. Army standards require education educa-tion equivalent to the fourth grade in grammer school. Statistics Statis-tics compiled at National Selec-. tive Service Headquarters show that 5 percent of approximately 2,000,000 registrants who have been examined for induction were disqualified for lack of sufficient education. This would present a discouraging picture from the viewpoint of American ideals, were it not for the unusually high educational attainments of the vast majority of the selectees who qualify for induction. Among the inducted selectees who have been educated beyond high school, 4 percent had attended attend-ed college for 1 year, 3 percent for 2 years, 1 percent for 3 years, and 4 percent were college graduates. gradu-ates. In addion, 1 percent were college postgraduates. Indicating also high type of intelligence and educational attainments at-tainments of the men being provided pro-vided for the Army by the Selective Selec-tive Service System in the recent announcement by the war Department De-partment that 62 percent of the men in the Army who will be trained for commissioned officers this year will be selectees and that approxmately 59 percent of the selectees in the Army will have attained advanced rank during dur-ing their year of military training. train-ing. Alsa. the War Department has predicted that a large proportion pro-portion of the selectees who remain re-main privates will receive increased in-creased pay through specialist ratings. |
