Army needs and those of lend-lease gobbled up just about all the shoe leather lying around loose, so civilians must make one pair of shoes do where they were accustomed to conga through life on two or three pairs during the same period. Some of our shoemen, seeing this crisis coming, began experimenting with "ersatz" shoes that contain little or no leather. A stylist has come up with a likely substitute for soles wood just plain lumber. Picture at left shows a handsaw operator cutting out the rough shape of the sole. At right is Norman L.
