Show The Luckless Legion Once again, in 1958, an increasing number of Americans joined ranks of The Luckless Legion. They joined this Army of the injured and dead with seemingly relentless enthusiasm for suffering and pain. There is no glory attached to being a member of The Luckless Legion. Yet 12 more people than in 1957 crashed through the sound driving barrier, to be numbered among the injured. It is small comfort that there were 5 fewer deaths. The Lucky Legion set a recruiting record in 1958. One out of every 61 Americans was killed or injured on the highway. Perhaps "by calling attention to the existence of the Luckless Legion, we will be able to slow down this insatiable zeal to enlist.
