Show ;:;rU4atH7lliy 'hWCiyWIW ISP lt3tillf 1 If Itj Everyone is suddenly talking about Juvenile Detention Homes, committees are being appointed, this person and that person are all joining in the demand that something be done. Since last December The South East Independent has been trying to show the necessity for some change in the situation. It does seem, however, that suddenly this condition has become a vehicle for publicity. Very few of the people now engaged in clamoring for something to be done have had any expierence or spent any length of time in study of the situation. Mere knowledge that a change is needed does not imply knowledge of what should be done. "Experts" with one or two weeks spare time study of the Juvenile Detention Home problem are popping up all over. We have people mat have been involved directly with Juvenile Detention problems for years and could give intelligent and quick answers to the problem. They have both study and expierence to justify their reccomendations. Why are they not asked for the answer? Why are people with no experience with the problem suddenly given the responsibility for finding the solution? The South East Independent makes absolutely no claim to having the answer. It has merely helped to determine that a problem exists. The Independent does believe that there are people available with the necessary knowledge to give intelligent answers to the problem and that it is impossible to appoint people to study the problem for a week or two and then expect a quality answer. For some reason or other the Juvenile Detention Home problem is surrounded with "hush-hush" and why this is can only be suspected. , Assure the people that are, and have been, directly involved with Juvenile Detention that they can talk freely and the answers to the Juvenile Detention Home question will be presented to the public in twenty-four hours. |
